Nomi had been to Casino Starlight before, albeit underneath of it. She was one of the lucky few who had been inside of Killian Decker's underground laboratory. And, of course, the woman sitting across from Nomi was another such person.[break][break]
Lulu Flint looked about as tired as Nomi felt - ever since their journey to Meteno, the two - along with several other Rocket scientists - had been busy working on various Tera Crystal-related experiments, as well as making preparations for an expedition into the newly discovered Ultra Deep Sea. Nomi was excited about all of the recent discoveries Rocket had been able to make, but the interrogation of Dr. Holo had left a bitter taste in her mouth.[break][break]
She sipped her vibrant Galaxy cocktail, the bustling fifth floor restaurant of Casino Starlight a blur of colorful wait staff, decadent dishes, and enthusiastic voices. She and Lulu sat by a large window with a brilliant view of the cityscape below, a prime spot that Nomi suspected had been reserved for them due to their association with Killian. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, Nomi turned her gaze on her dinner companion.[break][break]
"Thank you for inviting me to dinner," she said softly, smiling at her mentor. "I've always struggled to take time off."

she sipped on an expensive anejo, having told naomi to order whatever her heart desired. money was no object for someone who had perhaps saved her life--not that she was prepared to offer naomi so much credit outright. gratitude was spoke in the language of her actions.[break][break]

"of course," she assured, as though this were the most normal thing in the world. the fact of the matter was that lulu flint did not treat people to outings. rarely did she even offer smiles.[break][break]

Lulu was still an enigma in many ways, as curious as the scientific hypotheses she sought to prove, but Nomi was starting to get a hint of who the head scientist really was behind her no-bullshit, serious demeanor. Nomi also knew an excuse when she heard one, and it was clear Lulu preferred being alone in the lab over socializing. She didn't call this out, however, merely nodded in understanding. After all, Nomi was guilty of the exact same behavior.[break][break]
"I don't sleep much these days, either," she agreed. In truth, dark dreams were the source of Nomi's recent insomnia. As the year turned over, Nomi couldn't help but feel apprehensive rather than enthusiastic. Everyone always prattled on about resolutions and goals, but Nomi wondered how much time the people around her actually spent on reflection. Shouldn't they learn from the previous year before swiftly moving into the next?[break][break]
"I've been thinking about...the end of all universes," Nomi admitted. "The stuff the DRK Triad believes. Should we really plan for the worst?" She sipped her drink, its flavor too sweet.

nomi's question roused a feeling that wasn't quite welcome. doubts, briefly reawakened. her hand lingered on her glass, and she was quiet briefly.[break][break]

"we should plan to overcome. however, we should always remain prepared for the worst. it should not be a shift from the norm."[break][break]

her glass came up to hover near her lips. "beyond work, i would argue that it is the smartest way to live." never mind how it tended to corrode and exhaust the psyche.

They were wise words, but Lulu rarely said anything foolish. For how young she was - relatively speaking - she seemed to have a wealth of knowledge and experience, that of a much older woman. She has lived through a lot, Nomi reminded herself, though she did not know all of the details of Lulu's life. At the very least, their close-encounter with death on the surface of Meteno was enough to keep Nomi grounded in the practicality behind Lulu's sentiments.[break][break]
Always prepare for the worst.[break][break]
It was a stressful, paranoid way to live, but perhaps that's what it would take to save Hoenn. Save the planet.[break][break]
"What made you want to be a scientist?" Nomi asked, a jarring pivot in their conversation. Perhaps a strange question, when they could be planning their next moves. But all of a sudden, Nomi felt like getting to know her mentor better.[break][break]

the question caught her off guard. it was something she hadn’t reflected on much, although she felt like she knew the answer well enough. she’d done it because Cillian Quinn had done it first, only she’d failed to develop the same interests, and gone in another direction entirely.[break][break]

Lulu's answer didn't surprise Nomi, though it didn't feel like the whole story, either. Lulu was a private person, and Nomi had not expected to learn everything about her life choices merely by asking a simple question. But...it did make sense, and Nomi could understand what Lulu meant. Science often created far more questions than it answered; for every discovery, a new hypothesis would emerge. Science drew the intensely curious to it like a magnet. Nomi was one such person, as well.[break][break]
"My parents were scientists," Nomi explained to Lulu. "They died when I was a toddler, on a special assignment in Kanto." She paused. "I joined Rocket to try and find out what happened to them. I've gathered leads, but I do not have all the answers yet. In any case, I guess I inherited a highly curious mind from them. Destined for science, perhaps. I wanted to follow in their footsteps, continue their work."[break][break]
Was that what she was doing? In many ways, she now worked on projects her parents could only have dreamed of, far surpassing their own achievements. They'd never been to space, as far as she knew. They'd never encountered any legendary Pokémon, or discovered new types of energy. She'd read as much as she could find on their research, but they had, unfortunately, died before accomplishing anything truly great.[break][break]
Nomi would not make the same mistake.[break][break]

It was as if Lulu had read her mind.[break][break]
"No," Nomi declared. She sipped her drink, expression hardening, like a diamond under pressure. "I have far surpassed the research they'd managed to publish prior to their deaths. They would probably be awed by some of the discoveries I've made."[break][break]
Proud was the word she'd almost used, but that thought elicited a pang of regret. Nomi did not like interacting with the feelings that stirred when she thought too hard about what her parents might say about her if they were alive now, their love a ghost best left buried.[break][break]
"Do you have any family, Lulu?" Nomi asked softly, deftly maneuvering the conversation back in Lulu's direction. "That you keep in touch with?"
